Phony Ppl, solo unos pibes de Brooklyn haciendo excelente música

Brooklyn ha sido siempre una fuente inagotable de música y talento. A lo largo de la historia muchos grandes artistas han surgido de esta barrio a las afueras de Nueva York, en donde el crisol de razas y de culturas generan un contexto perfecto para el nacimiento constante de experesiones de todo tipo. Desde las artes plásticas y visuales, pasando por la poesía, el cine y la música. Ellos son hijos de ese barrio, otro grupo más, haciendo lo único que saben hacer, música. Dificil de definir, los Phony Ppl son una banda independiente de amigos de la secundaria que a diferencia de los artistas de hip hop, hacen música, entienden música, respiran música las 24 hs de los siete días de la semana. Lograron crear algo propio y particular, que lo muestra como una de las bandas del futuro cercano. Entrevista y traducción por Iñaki Durán. IG: @ikduran - ¿Cuándo se conocieron y qué los hizo querer hacer música juntos? Elbee y Aja se conocieron en el colegio, estaban en la misma clase de música, y se hicieron rápidamente amigos. Sin embargo, todos, nos conocimos en la secundaria provenientes de diferentes escuelas de Brooklyn. Elbee fue a Murrow y reclutó a algunos Phony PPL y Aja fue a la Brooklyn Highschool of The Arts y reclutó al resto de la banda. Las secundarias a las que fuimos nos permitieron ser una orquesta, una banda de jazz, etc, mientras que estudiábamos matemáticas y arte. - ¿Qué música escuchaban en esos años de gestación de la banda? ¡Mucha música! La gran mayoría venimos con mucha data debido a que muchos de nuestros padres eran DJ's y desde pequeños nos vimos forzado a amar clásicos de Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind and Fir, Michael Jackson, The Jackson 5, The Foster Sylvers, The Meters, y la lista continúa. En el colegio comenzamos a escuchar cosas más nuevas como Pharrell, Flying Lotus, J Dilla, Madlib, Amy Winehouse, y mucho más. También nos metimos mucho con la música brasilera, y la compartíamos con la gente. Desde Joao Donato, Joao Gilberto, Ley Andrade. Escuchábamos y seguimos escuchando de todo, hay buenas cosas en todos lados. -¿Y que pasa en Brooklyn? ¿Hay algo en el aire o en el agua que hace que salga tanto talento de ahí? Jajaja ¡Yo no sé! Brooklyn es una mezcla de culturas, Nueva York lo es, pero Brooklyn es donde está toda la cultura. Este lugar ha criado a grandes talentos desde siempre, desde Jimmy Lovine, Mike Tyson, Michael Jordan, Woodie Allen, Jay Z, Mos Def y la lista sigue y es una locura, Brooklyn es una locura. - Ustedes mezclan un montón de géneros lo que hace dificil definirlos. ¿Cuáles son las ventajas y desventajas de ser una banda dificil de encasillar? Algunas de las ventajas de ser una banda sin género es que nunca nos ponemos en una caja, podemos crear lo que querramos en cualquier momento. Rock, country, bossa, hip hop, cualquier cosa que sintamos la podemos hacer sonido. Las desventajas es que a veces es dificil que la gente sepa que de todo eso que hacemos les gusta y que no, esto a veces genera que no nos escuchen y se pierdan de cosas que seguramente les gusten. Pero nosotros tratamos de que nos escuchen y tenga la mente abierta, nosotros seguiremos siendo una banda así, sin género. - En el mundo del hip hop lo individual está por arriba de lo colectivo ¿qué tan dificil es ser una banda en el mundo del hip hop? Nosotros somos todos músicos, eso ayuda mucho. Nuestra música la hacemos entre todos. Nos sentamos, de a grupos o entre todos y componemos, probamos cosas, escribimos. Hacemos hip hop pero creemos que nuestra música trasciende ese género. - ¿Bandas como The Roots los hacen seguir teniendo fé? Claro, ellos son increibles. Las bandas negras en general nos incentivan a seguir. - ¿Qué otras bandas los influenciaron para ser lo que son? The Foster Sylvers, Jackson 5, Jamiroquai, The Police, Toto, EW&F, Mandrill, y muchos más.

- Son una banda independiente ¿que tan dificil es luchar contra la industria musical? ¡Muy dificil! Financiarse es muy complicado cuando lo haces por tus medios. Es algo dificil de dominar, pero estamos aprendiendo, ya tendremos la fórmula. - ¿Cómo es un día de los Phony ppl? Nos levantamos y nos encontramos en algún lugar. Comemos y boludeamos por varias horas en donde escuchamos música y jugamos al Super Smash Bros; luego vamos a ensayar o a grabar a La Casa (la casa de MaffYuu) o al SpaceMent (la casa de Elbee); seguimos jugando un poco más, nos dispersamos, nos lavamos y repetimos lo mismo. - ¿Y ahora qué música están escuchando? La nuesta, jajaja, tenemos un disco que terminar. - ¿Qué se viene a corto plazo? Estamos terminando de grabar un disco y planeando una gira junto a la hermosa Kali Uchis, que es una artista de California y hacer música genial. - Un mensaje para sus fans en América Latina... Phony Ppl, some guys from Brooklyn doing great music

- When did you met and what made you want to make music together? Elbee and Aja met in middle school, they were in the same music class, and became quick friends. We all, however, met in high school’s, different schools throughout Brooklyn. Elbee went to Murrow and recruited some Ppl, and Aja went to Brooklyn Highschool of The Arts and recruited some Ppl. Before we knew it we were Phony Ppl. The high schools that we all went to were performing arts schools, they gave us programs that allowed us to be in orchestra, jazz band, etc. all while going to Math, and Language Arts, all that. - What music did you listen to in those gestation years of the band? Tons of music, theres so many of us to not have a grand pallet of music under our belts. Most of our dads are DJ, and since young forced us to know and love classic songs by Stevie , Earth Winds and Fire, Michael Jackson, The Jackson 5, The Foster Sylvers, The Meters, the list goes on. So, we all carried that music with us. In high school, however, LOTS of Pharrell , Flying Lotus, J Dilla, Madlib, Amy Wienhouse, MUCH more. We Got HEAVLY into Brazilian Music around that time and would share it with each other ! Joao Donato, Joao Gilberto, Leny Andrade. We listened and still listen to Everything, theres some good in everything. - And what happend in Brooklyn? Has something on the air or the water that makes so much talent come out of there? HAHAH, YO NO SE ! BROOKLYN is a melting pot for culture, New York is, YES, but BROOKLYN is where all the culture is. Brooklyn has been breeding amazing talent since forever. Jimmy Iovine, Mike Tyson, Michael Jordan, Woodie Allen, Jay Z, Mos Def, the list is CRAZY. brooklyn is Crazy. - You guys mix a lot of genres blended in something hard to define. What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a band hard to define? Some advantages of being “GenreLess” is that we will never put ourselves in a box. we can litereally create anything we want at any point in time. Rock, Country, Hip Hop, Bossa Nova, whatever were feeling like we can turn that into sound. The Disadvantage is that it is sometimes hard for people to pin point what they like about it, and it may discourage them from listening, when theres too much going on it can be distracting to the listener. but we definitely encourage people to have an open mind. we plan to stay GenreLess. - In the world of hip hop most of the time the individuality is above the collective. How difficult is it to be a band in the hip hop world? Were all musicians. That helps a lot, the music isn’t made based off of one individual. We all sit down, maybe in groups, or as a whole band and compose. Yes, We play Hip hop but we feel our music transcends the genre. - Do bands like The Roots make you keep believing? Yea, they’re awesome. Black bands in general keep us going. keep it going guys !! - What other bands have influenced you to be what you are? The Foster Sylvers, Jackson 5, Jamiroquai, The Police, Toto, EW&F, Mandrill, WAY MORE !! - You are an independent band, how difficult is to fight against the music industry? Super hard. Funding is super hard when your by yourself. Its Easy to be independent, Difficult to master. were Still learning, but were getting the formula correct ! - How is a Phony ppl day? Wake Up. Meet Up, Eat, Bull Shit around for 3-7 Hours playinG Super Smash Bros and Listening to Music, then Rehearse // Record at the Casa (MaffYuu House) or the SpaceMent (Elbee House), Play smash for about 1-2 more hours. Then we disperse. Rinse and Repeat. - Now in what are you guys in to? what music are you listening? Ours, we gotta album to finish. - What comes in the world of Phony Ppl? album? tour?
