Deluxe, el circo del groove

Ya les hemos presentando muchos artistas de Francia como Saian Supa Crew, Chinese Man, Ben l'Oncle Soul, Taiwan MC... lo que demuestra el gran nivel musical que hay allá y lo fuerte que está la escena, con diversidad y mucho profesionalismo, de músicos que entienden la industria y trabajan para eso. Hoy, les presentamos una de las bandas que más nos gustan, con un sonido muy particular que coquetea con el funk, con el hip hop y el soul, pero que no es nada. O si, es Deluxe. Entrevista y traducción x Iñaki Durán. - ¿Cuándo se conocieron y cómo comienza Deluxe? Deluxe existe desde el año 2007, comenzó gracias a 5 amigos de la niñez que compartían su amor por la música y que soñaban con poder vivir de ella. Ellos buscaron este objetivo durante años, tocando en las calles de Aix, en Provence, una pequeña ciudad a las afueras de Marseille. Tocaron en muchos bares y pequeños clubes en el sur de Francia, y hasta formaron una productora llamada "Deluxe Evenements" para tocar en bodas y otras fiestas privadas, antes de conocer a su hija adoptiva Liliboy (cantante) en el año 2011. - ¿Cómo fue la búsqueda musical de la banda? Porque son un grupo muy conceptual, no solo a nivel musical, sino también en el plano estético, visual, etc. Nos inspiran cosas muy diversas ¡somos 6 personas! Tenemos uno muy metido en la música folcklórica francesa, otros en el jazz, uno de los chicos está con la movida RnB new surf/post core, y a otros ni siquiera les gusta la música pero les gusta comer cosas en las giras. Nuestro terreno común es el hip hop, funk y soul. Visualmente nos gusta dar una buena fiesta en cada show, y mantener entretenida a la gente sobre todas las cosas, desde el principio al final. - ¿Cómo estaba la escena musical en Marseille en esa época en donde ustedes comenzaban a llamar la atención? ¿Estaban preparados para un proyecto como el suyo? Creo que nadie estaba preparado para nada pero te puede decir que nosotros estamos orgullosos de venir de Marseille y Aix. Aix es una ciudad en donde tocar a la gorra o en la calle es posible (la policía al menos dejó de echarnos de los lugares). Conocimos grandes músicos en Marseille que crecimos escuchando como Kenny Arkana y IAM, que participó de nuestro último disco con un tema que se llama "à l’heure oû" que habla sobre la música como cura para todo. Fue un sueño cumplido, sin dudas.

- El sonido de Deluxe es una combinación perfecta entre hip hop, funk y pop. ¿Por qué eligieron estos géneros a la hora de expresar sus sentimientos? Es la música que nos gusta escuchar y por ende, tocar. Cada uno responde frente a diferentes géneros, y el resultado ese ese sonido que tenemos, nuestra jam session de sonidos. - ¿Y qué onde con el bigote? ¿Tiene algún significado? Uno de los integrantes del grupo tiene una rara enfermedad, el bigote múltiple. Cada vez que se afeita el bigote le crece instantáneamente. Y eso llama la atención, es lo único que le miras. Entonces para que no se sienta tan solo en el mundo, todos decidimos por dejarnos el bigote. Comenzó por solidaridad pero con el tiempo se convirtió en un amuleto de la suerte. - Ahora están presentando "Stachelight", su último disco de estudio. ¿Qué aprendieron de su primera experiencia con "Deluxe Family Dinner" que aplicaron en este? ¿Qué cosas cambiaron? Mantenemos el mismo espíritu, haciendo lo que nos gusta. La gran diferencia es que grabamos en formato vivo, todos juntos, en vez de que cada uno grabe su parte por separado. Esto hizo que se vea más la esencia del vivo de la banda, que es muy importante. - ¿Y ahora ya están pensando en algo nuevo? ¡Si! Estamos trabajando en el nuevo disco mientras estamos de gira. Pero el año que viene vamos a parar un poco para poder terminarlo. Mientras tanto subimos videos en diferentes puntos del mundo, reversionando nuestros temas viejos cuando nos pinta. - ¿Y cómo ven la escena musical europea? ¿Creen que proyectos como el de ustedes tienen oportunidades para alcanzar audiencias grandes y promocionar su música? Nosotros hemos tenido mucha suerte, pero nos levantamos todos los días bien temprano para hacer funcionar esto que logramos. Como cualquier persona con un sueño o un trabajo. Y en los momentos en los que no hay oportunidades, uno las tiene que crear. ¡Gracias Beyoncé! - ¿Cuándo los vamos a ver por América Latina? Nos emociona pensar que podemos viajar a cualquier parte del mundo con nuestra música. Pero por ahora América Latina nos queda un poco lejos, igualmente mantenemos los dedos cruzados. - ¿Conocen música de este lado del océano? ¡Un poco! No conocemos cosas muy actuales, pero si miras la lista de temas de los miembros de Deluxe, vas a encontrar cosas de Astor Piazzola y del Gato Barbieri. - ¿Y qué artistas de Francia nos pueden recomendar? Mmmm.... Nos encanta Camille, Saian Supa Crew, Jacques Brel y ahora estamos mucho con Phases Cachées. - Un saludo para los fans... Argentina, esperamos poder vernos algún día. Creo que sus bigotes pueden ser geniales.

DELUXE – Interview - When you met each other? And how Deluxe begun? Deluxe exists since 2007! It started out as 5 childhood friends who share their love for music and dream of making it their life’s work. They busked for years in the streets of Aix en Provence a little city outside of Marseille, played in tons of bars and little clubs in the South of France and even ran an enterprise called « Deluxe Evenements » to play at weddings and other private events before meeting and adopting Liliboy in 2011. - And how was the musical search of the group? Because you’re a very conceptual band, not only musically speaking, you also work a lot the esthetic, the visual, etc. We’re inspired by all sorts of different things: there are 6 of us! One is into folkloric french music, others deep into jazz, one is very fond of new surf /post core r’n’b, and some don’t even listen to music but just like to eat stuff on tour. Our common ground is probably hip hop, funk and soul music : we’ve listened and covered a lot M, IAM. Visually, we want to make a real party out our show, and above all keep you entertained from the start to the finish!! - How was the musical scene in Marseille at that time? They were ready for a particular and unique project like yours? I don’t know if anyone was ready for anything but I do know we’re proud to come from Marseille and Aix. Aix is a city where busking on a daily basis was possible (the police men finally gave up on kicking us out!). We’ve met a couple of awesome musicians from Marseille we’ve grown up listening to, like Kenny Arkana and especially IAM, our dream-come-true featuring on our latest album : check out the track « à l’heure oû » that talks about music as a healer, music above all! - The sound of Deluxe is a perfect mix of hip hop, funk and pop. Why you choose this genres to express the feelings of the band? What do you thinks this sounds has over other genres? I guess it simply ressembles the musics we most like and listen to. We all respond differently to different musics and this here is our jam! - And why the moustache? Which is the meaning? One of us is sick with a very rare disease: the multiple mustachio. Every time he shaves it off it instantly grows back out. And that’s all you can see of him. For him to not be so lonely in the difference, we all adopted the mustach. It was for solidarity and overtime it became a lucky charm! - Now you’re playing “Stachelight”, your last studio album. What things you learned after you first experience in the studio that you applied in this new one? And in the music and lyric aspect, what is different? We’re staying in the same spirit, doing what we love! But we did record the whole thing live all together instead of one after the other, to get a more «live » sound, that ressembles us more. - And now you’re thinking in recording something new or other new projects? Because you drop a lot of videos, it’s seems that you can’t stop doing things. Yay! We’re working on the new album while we tour, but the real « album break » where we don’t do anything else will be in 2018! Yup yup we keep our dusty tracks alive by making new videos every time we get a funky feeling from the butthole! - And what do you think about the music industry in Europe now? You think that groups like Deluxe have real opportunity to reach big audiences, to promote their music? I know we’re lucky but i also know we show up every morning of everyday to get Deluxe going! Just like anybody with a dream or a job. When there’s no opportunity you make an opportunity! Thank you Beyoncé! - And when Deluxe will come to Argentina and other countries of Latin America? We’re thrilled every time we get a chance to travel the world with our music! For now Latin America is still far away; but we keep our fingers crossed. - You know music from here? Anything you like? Actually, a tiny bit! Not very recent stuff but as i check everyone’s playlists we’ve got some Astor Piazzola and some Gato Barbieri!
